18th Century Artists

18th century artist most famous for theirs paintings: John Singleton Copley, Goya Francisco José de Goya, Katsushika Hokusai, J.M.W. Turner, John James Audubon, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, George Catlin

John Singleton Copley John Singleton Copley (1738-1815)
John Singleton Copley was an American artist of the colonial period, famous for his portraits of important figures in colonial New England. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, his portraits were innovative in that they tended to portray their subjects with artifacts that were indicative of their lives. Copley demonstrated a genius for rendering surface textures and capturing emotional immediacy.

Goya Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828)
By the 1780s Goya was Spain's leading painter, specializing in religious pictures and portraits. He left a ruthlessly penetrating record of his patrons and private expressions of introspection, moral objectivity, and caustic commentary on his times. A 1792 illness left Goya deaf and mentally broken. He turned inward and began painting dark, disturbing, private works. His etchings expressed his distaste for the corrupt, fanatical establishment, particularly the Church, for whom he worked. During the Napoleonic wars, Goya recorded his reactions to the occupying French army's atrocities. By 1814, the repressive Spanish monarchy was restored and Goya resumed painting the royals, whom he portrayed with at times unflattering frankness.

Katsushika Hokusai Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)
Hokusai was a painter and wood engraver, born in Edo (now Tokyo). He produced illustrations and color prints that drew their inspiration from the traditions, legends, and lives of the Japanese people. The free curved lines characteristic of his style gradually developed into a series of spirals that imparted the utmost freedom and grace to his work. His prints were imported to Paris in the mid-19th century and enthusiastically collected by impressionist artists.

J.M.W. Turner Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851)
A romantic landscape and marine artist, topographer and universal art visionary, pulsating with colour and atmospherics, Turner is considered Britain's greatest painter.
John Constable John Constable (1776-1837) John Constable was born in East Bergholt, a village on the River Stour in Suffolk, England. He became a great landscape painter. The area of Dedham Vale in Suffolk is known as 'Constable Country'.

John James Audubon John James Audubon (1785-1851)
Audubon was born in Haiti, the illegitimate son of a French sea captain and his mistress, and raised in France by his stepmother. In 1803 his father obtained a false passport for for him to travel to the United States to avoid the draft for the Napoleonic Wars. He sailed down the Mississippi intent on finding and painting all the birds of North America. In order to draw or paint the birds, he had to shoot them. Between 1827 and 1839 he published Birds of America, a book of bird paintings and, with William MacGillivray, Ornithological Biographies. His final work was on mammals, the Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. He is buried in the Trinity Churchyard Cemetery at 155th Street and Broadway in Manhattan, New York.

Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875)
Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was a French landscape painter. He was a regular contributor to the Salon during his lifetime, and in 1846 was decorated with the cross of the Legion of Honour. Of the painters classed in the Barbizon school Corot will live the longest, and will continue to occupy the highest position.

George Catlin George Catlin (1796-1872)
Catlin was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Indians had a strong influence on Catlin's life because his mother had once been captured by them; they were his subject matter. In 1831 Catlin set off for St. Louis, became friends with General William Clark and ventured up the Platte River. Later he traveled up the Missouri to Ft. Union on a steamboat and returned by canoe to sketch places he had missed. The paintings from these trips form a magnificent exhibit and were presented to Congress for sale in 1838, only to be rejected. Catlin took his works to Europe where they were displayed in the Lourve and elsewhere and admission was charged to see them. They were then hung at Sharkys casino in northern Nevada until it closed in 1999.
