17th Century Artists

17th century artist most famous for theirs paintings: Adriaen Brouwer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Louise Moillon, Johannes Vermeer, Canaletto Giovanni Antonio Canal, Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin

Adriaen Brouwer Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638)
Adriaen Brouwer was born in Oudenaarde, Belgium. His works are typically detailed and small, often adopting themes of debauchery, drunkenness and foolishness. Brouwer himself spent much time in the alehouses of Flanders and Holland. Both Rubens and Rembrandt owned a number of his works.

Rembrandt van Rijn Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)
Rembrandt, the greatest of all the Baroque masters settled in Amsterdam in 1631. He took a sensuous interest and delight in the physical qualities of his medium, independence from the subject. He caked his surfaces with more paint than necessary, replaced exact imitation of form by the suggestion of it, and used a brown ground so that his paintings emerged from dark to light. He worked in complex layers, building up a picture from the back to the front with delicate glazes that allowed light to permeate his backgrounds and reflect off the white underpainting.

Louise Moillon Louise Moillon (1610-1696)
Moillon is the greatest French still-life painter of the seventeenth century. She spent her career in Paris. Her paintings are exquisitely rendered with painstaking attention to detail. She worked for a number of distinguished patrons, including the highest nobility of France and King Charles I of England. Most of her work dates from the 1630's, prior to her marriage in 1640.

Johannes Vermeer Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)
Johannes Vermeer created luscious canvases of women and men in seventeenth-century rooms, outdoor scenes, allegory and religious themes. Intricate combinations of light, color, proportion and scale enhance the mood and reality of the subjects.

Canaletto Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768)
Canaletto was a Venetian artist famous for his landscapes or vedute of Venice. A large collection of Canalettos is owned by the British Monarchy.

Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779)
Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin was born, lived and died in Paris. He is known for his beautifully textured still lifes as well as his sensitive and touching genre paintings. Simple, even stark, but treasured paintings of common household items and an uncanny ability to portray children's innocence in a nonsentimental manner make his paintings universal across time.
