- Born in Oudenaarde, Brouwer was a student of Frans Hals alongside Adriaen van Ostade.

- His works are typically detailed and small, often adopting themes of debauchery, drunkenness and foolishness. Brouwer himself spent much time in the alehouses of Flanders and Holland.
